Mayssia (May) Elajami was born in Red Deer, Alberta and was raised both in Alberta and Ontario. May is passionate about the Charter and wants to ensure that rights guaranteed under the Charter are protected. This is inline with May’s values that basic fundamental human rights should be protected and that there should be checks and balances with how far the state imposes their power. May always had a life long dream of becoming a lawyer since she was in grade five.
She graduated from the University of Toronto in 2008 with an Honours Bachelors of Arts Degree Majoring in both History and English. She then took a year off and worked in Marketing. May then went on to complete a Post-Graduate Diploma in Journalism (specializing in Broadcast and Online Journalism) and graduated from Humber College in 2012. After completing her Post-Grad, May took a year off and worked with start-up companies helping develop various areas of their business. May then graduated from Sussex University Law School in Brighton UK where she received an Honours LLB in 2014. While in Law School, among other things, May helped start the Innocence Project and held a role on the Executive Committee. She was also Vice-Ambassador of Aspiring Solicitors.
Before joining Mass Tsang LLP in 2017, May articled for a prominent, high-pace criminal law firm in Toronto and was later hired on as an associate, after being called to the Bar of the Law Society of Upper Canada in 2016. She worked in all areas of criminal and regulatory law and takes Legal Aid.
