Have you received a Speeding Ticket? Been charged with Careless Driving and are worried about it ruining your driving record and increasing your insurance rates? At Mass Tsang LLP, we have the knowledge to defend your case! Call us at 416-781-1148 and you will have one of the best traffic lawyers in Toronto working with you to fight your ticket.

A traffic ticket can cause fines, demerit points, suspension of your driving privileges and even jail. We assist with all traffic tickets and motor vehicle related charges issued under the Highway Traffic Act, Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act and Liquor Licence Act or Criminal Code of Canada in the Provinces of Ontario and Quebec. Founding partner Jeff Mass was called to both the Law Society of Ontario and the Barreau du Québec, making Mass Tsang one of a small number of Toronto firms able to handle traffic and driving-related matters in both provinces. Mass Tsang LLP is a leading traffic tickets law firm that is focused on getting you the justice you deserve.

Highway Traffic Act Charges We Defend

Here's a lawyer-framed map of the most common matters we handle — not a full fine schedule.

Speeding Tickets

Speeding matters range from minor tickets to high-speed allegations that raise demerit and insurance stakes. Disclosure and how the measurement was taken can matter.

Careless Driving (HTA s. 130)

Careless driving is driving "without due care and attention or without reasonable consideration for other persons using the highway." A conviction carries a fine of $400 to $2,000, up to 6 months in jail, a licence suspension of up to 2 years, and 6 demerit points — where the driving causes bodily harm or death, the charge becomes far more serious. Defence usually starts with disclosure and how the officer characterized the driving pattern.

Stunt Driving / Racing (HTA s. 172)

Stunt driving covers specific speed thresholds (broadly, 40 km/h or more over the limit in zones posted under 80 km/h, 50 km/h or more over in zones posted 80 km/h or higher, or 150 km/h outright) as well as racing-style conduct. It carries an immediate roadside licence suspension and vehicle impound before any court date, on top of court-imposed fines, possible jail, and an escalating licence suspension on conviction that increases sharply for repeat offences within a set window. Ontario increased stunt-driving penalties in 2026 under the Safer Roads and Communities Act — treat this as one of the highest-stakes HTA files and act quickly.

Driving While Suspended / No Insurance

Driving while suspended or without insurance can affect your licence, demerit points, and insurance eligibility going forward. Get advice on exactly what the charging document says — this isn't a Criminal Code matter, but the consequences can still be serious.

Commercial Vehicle and CVOR Tickets

Owner-operators and commercial drivers can face Highway Traffic Act tickets that also affect a commercial abstract and a carrier's CVOR record — the job and insurance stakes can be higher than for a personal ticket. Get advice on the specific documents in your case.

Advice on how to fight a ticket

You can fight tickets by proving that the police officer was incorrect in giving you a ticket.

This can happen through a misunderstanding of the Ontario Highway Traffic Act (HTA). This document is very detailed and easy to misinterpret.

Knowledge of this document will assist you greatly in fighting any ticket and providing valid proof if you are in the right.

We suggest you consult with our traffic lawyers in Toronto because we have an intricate knowledge of this document which could be used as a great tool in challenging traffic tickets.

How our traffic ticket lawyer can help you

We are devoted to helping you beat traffic tickets. Our traffic lawyers in Toronto will take the stress out of fighting traffic tickets. We will handle all the hard work for you including: filing the ticket with the court, obtaining a court date, requesting and reviewing disclosure (evidence of the officers and other witnesses), building a defence strategy, preparing for trial and fighting the ticket in court.

How traffic tickets can affect you

Traffic ticket violations under the Highway Traffic Act, Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act or Liquor Licence Act stay on your Ministry of Transportation driving record for three years and demerit points are accumulated for two years. Insurance companies keep this information usually for five years. Police officers can obtain your complete driving record and criminal history from the day you receive your driver’s licence.

Demerit Points and how demerit points work

You do not “lose” demerit points on your driving record. You start with zero points and gain points for being convicted of breaking certain traffic laws.

Demerit points stay on your record for two years from the date of the offence. If you accumulate too many demerit points, your driver’s licence could be suspended.

After You Get a Ticket in Toronto

Paying a ticket is treated as a guilty plea. Check the response date printed on the ticket itself — it controls your deadline. Depending on the charge, options typically include early resolution meetings or a trial. Counsel can request disclosure of the officer's notes and any other evidence the prosecution intends to rely on.

Our traffic lawyers in Toronto have the knowledge and experience needed to fight your traffic ticket. Call today at 416-781-1148 and our professional team of traffic ticket lawyers will ensure that you save yourself the time, money and stress associated with your traffic ticket.

FAQ

Paying is treated as a guilty plea. If demerit points, insurance, or your licence are at risk, get advice before paying.

Check your ticket. Some matters can be resolved through an early resolution meeting; a trial date is a separate, later step. Counsel can advise based on exactly what your ticket says.

Both are serious HTA charges, but stunt driving (HTA s. 172) is generally treated as higher-stakes — it can trigger an immediate roadside licence suspension and vehicle impound before any court date, on top of court penalties. Careless driving (HTA s. 130) doesn't carry that same roadside consequence. The exact charging document controls what you're actually facing.

Demerit points are a Ministry of Transportation record — they clear two years after the offence date. Insurance pricing is a separate decision made by your insurer, which typically keeps conviction information on file longer (commonly around five years). A single conviction can affect both.

No. HTA tickets are provincial offences. Impaired driving and other driving-related Criminal Code charges are separate and more serious — our Toronto DUI lawyers handle those Criminal Code matters specifically.

Yes. Commercial abstracts and carrier CVOR records can matter to your employment and insurance eligibility. Get advice on the specific documents in your case.
